Domain Rights

Have you ever thought seriously about what your domain rights are? What can you use legally and what can you not use? Public domain is a term that is used to describe items that are no longer under copyright and hence, can be used by anyone for any purpose. It would be nice to know what is public domain and what is not, wouldn't it? Then you could know for sure if you were violating someone's copyright or not. So why isn't there more information out there about public domain? Well, that's a very good question. There SHOULD be more information out there right now about public domain rights. It's an interesting as well as a very lucrative area, and the more you look into it, the more you will come to understand why there are whole businesses built around the central idea of public domain rights.

If something is in the public domain, you have the right to use it in any way you want to. You have the right to:

1. resdistribute it
2. change the format and resell it
3. alter the contents and resell it
4. alter the contents only slightly (i.e. a watermark) and copyright it
5. use the information for your own benefit
6. enjoy public domain rights products for no reason other than that they're interesting

The list, as you can probably guess, could go on and on.

There is something very special about public domain products, because, once something is used in the public domain, it because the property of whoever decides to republish it and place their own copyright on it.

I've written several articles on public domain, but for all you newbies out there, let me lay down some very common ways you can use public domain to turn a profit:

1. Digitize a genuine public domain book, alter it slightly, copyright it, and resell it on the internet
2. Print high-quality public domain rights photographs or images with a watermark, copyright them, reprint them for money
3. Develop an archive of public domain music to be resold after you copyright it
4. Create a collection of archival DVD's on any topic, copyright it, and resell it.
5. Make a completely unique product using public domain products, copyright and resell it.
6. Create educational videos using public domain footage, copyright and resell it to teachers and schools
7. Reprint classic sheet music, copyright it, and bound it in a collection to be sold to piano students

These are several ways to enjoy public domain rights products, but believe me, there are a lot more.
