How to Install a Watchman Sensor Kit

    • 1). Inspect your heating oil tank to determine its type. It could be a vertical or horizontal cylinder, or a vertical rectangle. If you have a horizontal cylinder oil tank, insert the converter rod up into the bottom of the transmitter. Attach the battery power tube into the top hole of the transmitter and screw it on until it is hand tight.

    • 2). Listen to the transmitter. It will make a series of sounds. After 25 seconds of these sounds, you will hear two consecutive beeps. When this occurs, disconnect the battery power tube and remove the converter rod. The sensor is now calibrated to measure oil in a horizontal tank.

    • 3). Look at the top of your oil tank to see if it has a 30-millimeter drilled hole at the top. The hole may have a tube in it. If it does, remove the tank cover and pull out the tube. If your tank does not have a hole, drill one using an electric drill with a 30-millimeter hole saw attachment on the top of the tank, at the same level as any of the openings located on the top of tank, such as the opening where you add the oil.

    • 4). Clip together the parts of the calibrating tube by pushing the segments into each other until you hear a click. Add segments to the calibrating tube until it is the height of your tank. Place a tube with no coupling section at the bottom of the calibrating tube.

    • 5). Hold the calibrating tube with the top aligned with the top of the oil tank. Measure three inches up from the outlet pipe at the bottom of the tank, and cut off the end of the tube at this mark with a hack saw. This is the zero mark, or the level where there is roughly 10 percent of your heating oil left in the tank.

    • 6). Insert the top of the calibrating tube into the transmitter base. Hold the calibrating tube straight and insert the battery power tube into the top of the transmitter and screw it in until it is hand tight. Listen to the transmitter, it will make a series of sounds for 25 seconds, followed by three consecutive beeps. The three beeps means that the transmitter sensor has been calibrated. Unscrew the battery power tube to disconnect it and remove the calibrating tube from the transmitter.

    • 7). Insert the bottom of the calibrating tube into the hole located at the top of your oil tank. Hold the rubber gasket located at the top of the tube, where it is inserted into the transmitter in place and press down firmly to ensure that the gasket makes a water tight seal.

    • 8). Position the transmitter over the calibrating tube gasket and firmly press it down to snap it in place. Insert a provided screw from the kit into the screw hole located at the bottom, interior of the transmitter and tighten it with a screwdriver. Test to see if the transmitter is firmly attached to the calibrating tube; if you can move it with your hand, you need to tighten the screw more.

    • 9). Connect the power cord of the Watchman sensor's display unit to an electrical outlet in a convenient location inside of your home. Turn it on and watch the display. When it has finished turning on, it will show a serial number and the letter "r."

Reinsert the battery power tube into the top of the transmitter and screw it in place until it is hand tight. Wait three minutes for the oil level in the tank to read on the sensor's display unit.
