The Bronx Brewery is located in the Port Morrix section of the South Bronx, New York City, founded in 2011. While many of the more recent East Coast craft beer operations have focused on testing innovative new styles and flavors, The Bronx Brewery has focused on delivering well-crafted classic American ales, starting with their flagship Pale Ale.

Since its founding, The Bronx Brewery had been brewing their beers from the Connecticut Cottrell Brewing Co.

, only opening their first owned and operated brewery in April, 2013 in Port Morris, the Bronx, NY. Since opening their own brewing facility, they have expanded into brewing three more styles offered year round: a Belgian Pale Ale, an India Pale Ale, and a Rye Pale AleThe Bronx Brewery has also expanded into canning their beers, increasing their distribution within the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut region.

The Brewery opened its doors to the public in September, 2014, where a small bar makes Bronx Brewery ales available on tap and an outdoor sitting area will open in 2015.

Rye Pale Ale

Style:Rye Pale Ale
ABV:6.3%
Serving Temp:46-54°F

About a quarter of Bronx Brewery's Rye Pale Ale's grain bill is made up of malted and flaked rye which gives the beer a spicier character than its sister, Bronx Pale Ale, but is only offered as a fall specialty beer.

Rye Pale Ale pours a orange-golden amber with medium head and mild stable retention. The addition of rye to this pale ale contributes a spicy character to the aroma that pairs beautifully with the piney hops.

Aside from the obvious hops and rye spice, there is citrus zest and malt behind that backs up the aroma profile nicely.

The flavor is earthy and slightly nutty with caramel malts and pumpernickel with apricot and orange marmalade. There is more of a hop profile with Rye Pale Ale than there is with Bronx Pale Ale. There is a medium finish with a slight lingering bitterness and spice. The rye did not dominate but worked well with the beer.

Rye Pale Ale does a good job of matching the spiciness of the rye with malt and hops without overstepping. For those who are looking for a beer that is fuller flavored than a typical pale ale but is very drinkable Rye Pale Ale does a good job of delivering. After the success of Bronx Brewery's Bronx Pale AleRye Pale Ale is a great step in the right direction as a slightly more challenging but well executed example of an American pale ale.
