Are There Planes That Are Standing Room Only?
Ryanair, a very low-budget and no frills airline based in Ireland is seriously considering planes set up in the seating arrange of "standing room only." It sounds like what you experience if you happen to live in a busy city and have a rush hour commute. And I imagine that the reality will not be much for difficult. The plan is to change the seats for the very short-haul flights to be seats where rather than sitting down you are forced to stand, leaning against seats.
Don't expect flights from Minneapolis to Richmond to ever adopt such an insane system. But sometime, if there is enough call for it, flights with shorter duration may in fact change to this method. Since it allows you to cram more seats into the plane passenger compartment, you can make all the flights cheaper. Or if you're a money making corporation, which they all are, then you may even simply profit without having to even pass on the savings to customers.
For passengers who search for cheap flights from Denver to San Francisco, they may not even be aware that it could in the future be an incredibly cheap seat but then later, after receiving their ticket with it's no money-back warning, that it's a standing seat ticket. Such a policy on any airline would cause an outrage. No-one except the very young and strong would be able to tolerate flights from Montreal to Orlando that make you stand for even ten minutes, let alone a number of hours. So when you call your airline to book tickets, make sure that you express your anger about the potential for this idea spreading from Europe.
