Supplements for Treatment of Osteoporosis
- Calcium is a mineral that is vital to our bodies. Yet a majority of Americans don't get enough of it, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation. It's also essential to your bones. Calcium can help stop the loss of bone mass, and in some cases can actually add to your bone density. Your body needs calcium, but as you grow older, it becomes less important. But the fact that your body doesn't demand as much calcium as you grow older doesn't mean you don't need to watch your intake. As you age, your body is less efficient in breaking down the calcium you do get.
- Vitamin D is just as important to a healthy bone structure as calcium. Not only can a vitamin D supplement help keep your bones healthy by improving the efficiency of calcium absorption, but it also helps muscles stay strong.
- Magnesium, like calcium, helps to increase bone density. Because it is closely related to calcium in its effect on the bones, take a supplement that is beneficial in relation to the amount of calcium you take. A good rule of thumb is a 2:1 ratio, calcium to magnesium.
- Vitamin K is another useful supplement for osteoporosis. In essence, the vitamin helps to bind calcium to the bones which creates more bone mass and strength.
