Local Landscaper Featured at “Classic Yass†Weekend
Head Turner Landscaping was the driving force behind one of the four open gardens in the Yass Valley for the "Classic Yass" weekend, 4 November 2012.
Yass is a regional Australian town 60km from the nearest city Canberra, but it wasn't a stretch for the Canberra based landscaping company, Head Turner Landscaping, to work there. Company owner, Mick Turner, explained, "I'm from Yass originally, so it was great to get back there and do some work in a community I know well".
Head Turner Landscaping's return to its roots comes after a journey that has given its founder the experience to produce innovative landscaping design and construction. Mick Turner has worked as a landscaper in London and Sydney and has recently returned to Canberra to produce his high-end garden designs in the nation's capital.
The garden featured in the "Classic Yass" weekend is a modern take on the classic kitchen garden. The Shaw Street garden was a typical backyard, which the client wanted wholly devoted to vegetable gardens.
The design started with utility at its base. When the gardener intended to spend a great deal of time tending to produce, the more that could be placed at working height, the better. Garden beds and working areas were raised to waist height, and easy access paths to the bespoke green house created from the arrangement of the beds.
The layout and raised beds are fantastic in every detail, down to the compost bins and water tanks - all on such a small block. Railway sleepers, stacked high to form well-drained, irrigated beds, had the potential to make the garden appear overcrowded, but through careful planning and a few optical illusions, the garden feels surprisingly spacious.
And as a food producing garden, it could have been all business. But the use of natural materials, wide borders and the use of shade trees makes it the perfect place to sit and watch vegetables grow.
The garden had a constant stream of visitors through the day, and received rave reviews. Local chef Phip Pickett was also there, using the garden's produce to feed the crowds.
"I saw a few familiar faces in the crowd", Mick Turner laughs, "but it wasn't all family. We seemed to be generating a fair bit of interest from new faces as well".
Those new faces have been a boon for the company, and Head Turner Landscaping continues from strength to strength as one of Canberra's leading landscape design and construction businesses.
