After a long, cold winter, there is nothing quite like the first day of spring, is there? Whether or not it the official start to the season, or a just day where the sun feels warm on your face and you don't have to bundle up in a snow jacket, hat, and gloves, spring definitely offers something for us to celebrate. To help your preschooler get into the spirit of the new season, try singing some of these songs (some are set to the tunes of many popular traditional songs).

With subjects from gardening and planting seeds to the windy spring weather, singing these songs isn't only fun for your little one, but they will help her learn about the change of seasons and the characteristics of spring, while helping to build her vocabulary. 

 

"I Plant A Seed"
(sung to the tune of "I'm a Little Teapot")

I plant a little seed in the cold, cold ground. 
Out comes the yellow sun, big and round. 
Down come the raindrops soft and slowly
Up comes the flower grow, grow, grow!

Caterpillar Change
(chanted)

There was a little caterpillar crawling all about. (walk fingers up arm)
He worked and he worked without a doubt. (wiggle fingers)
Wrapping himself in a snug cocoon. (wrap other hand around fingers)
Waiting and waiting, will it be soon? (hold fingers)
Look, he's coming out, my oh my! (raise arms in excitement)
For now he's become a beautiful butterfly (cross thumbs and flap hands like wings)

(sung to the tune of "B-I-N-G-O!)

(continue singing verses, eliminating letters in order and substituting with claps)

"The Little Caterpillar"
(sung to the tune of "The Itsy, Bitsy Spider")

The little caterpillar crawled up into a tree, 
Spun his cocoon and slept so quietly, 
All through the winter he didn't make a sound, 
He dreamt of his new life when he'd be flying all around. 
While he was sleeping the snow did gently fall, 
Winter came and went, then her heard the robin's call, 
Come on Mr. Butterfly, out of your cocoon 
Spread your wings and fly for me, while I sing my tune.

"Where is Spring?" 
(chanted)

Some days seem like winter, (cross your arms across your chest and shiver)
Some are nice and warm. (extend arms out and turn face to the sky)
Rainy days and windy days, (make rain motion with fingers, then pretend to be blown about)
Maybe it will storm. 
Warm or cold or wet or dry,
What will the weather be? (shrug shoulders and raise hands as if asking a question)
I think Spring is trying to play (point finger to chin)
Peek-a-boo with me! (hide face with hands and pop out)

in the garden creeps.
He spins himself a blanket
