Malaga city lies east of the Strait of Gibraltar and 130 km north of Africa. It shares the same name as the province it governs over. It has been well favoured by previous civilisations and is one of the oldest cities in the world having been founded in 770 BC by the Phoenicians. The Romans came and later the Arabs who used the stone from a Roman theatre to construct two castles that now are home to an archaeology and interpretation centre. Later on, after continuous struggle the city eventually fell to the reconquista of the Spanish Christians.

Besides the two centres housed within the castles there is also the Picasso Foundation, a five floored building which the famous painter once lived in. There is also the Contemporary Art Centre and museums dedicated to bullfighting, dolls' houses' and the municipality of the area. After a long day's sightseeing you may want to relax on the generous stretches of beaches that are well facilitated with accessories to shade you. With an annual average temperature of 23°C during the day and a mere 13°C during the night, the coldest months will be cool, and the hottest days are tempered by the sea breezes flowing in from the Mediterranean.

Malaga and its province also provide water sports of nearly every variety: sailing, wind and kite surfing, water skiing, scuba diving and canoeing. Other popular sports are well provided too like golf, hiking and mountain climbing. One of Malagas most famous sons is Antonio Banderas, if you arrive in Easter you may even have the opportunity to get a glimpse of him as he arrives to help out with the Easter Festival.

Besides the great historic monuments and the buildings that house them, the streets and squares are lined with shopping opportunities, little cafes and Moorish tea rooms to linger in after the day's bags have been filled with souvenirs, clothes and gifts to take home. Tapas bars to Michelin star restaurants provide for every taste. A cultural mixing pot and a profound setting are serious considerations for its candidature for the 2016 European Capital of Culture.

Also Malaga city is a mere 6km away from one of the busiest airports in Spain, which is well provided with transfers for those visiting the province and further afield. Buses, taxis, trains and a service, which can be booked in advance provided by Malaga airport transfers, are easily affordable. You can also rent a car that can also be booked in advance, which is ideal if you are going to take in a round of golf or visit one of the other fascinating towns and villages in the area.
