Molluscum Contagiosum Causes

102 9
Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a skin rash caused by a virus that was first described in 1817. The virus is a member of the Poxvirus family. It is common worldwide and accounts for about 1% of all skin disorders in the United States. It primarily affects children (boys more often than girls) and young adults. The incidence of molluscum contagiosum is increasing.
Molluscum contagiosum is transmitted by direct contact, either person to person or by shared items, such as clothing, towels, and washcloths. MC can be spread by contact sports. Furthermore, if a person touches the rash and then another part of his or her body, it can cause spread to that area (known as autoinoculation). If the face is involved, shaving may cause it to spread. Although the contagiousness is generally low, it is not known for how long an infected person can transmit the virus.
Outbreaks have occurred in the following settings: swimming pools, wrestling matches, during surgery, by a surgeon with a hand lesion (sore), having tattoos (rare), and sexually. It is likely that genital lesions are sexually transmitted. Lesions develop within two to three months after exposure. Some doctors consider MC a sexually transmitted disease in adolescents and adults and recommend that people with genital MC be tested for other STDs.
However, not all genital lesions in adults are sexually transmitted. Children with MC involving the genitals should be checked for possible sexual abuse. Nevertheless, genital lesions in children do not always mean that sexual abuse has occurred. There have been no reports of catching MC from a contaminated toilet seat. Although theoretically possible, this means of transmission is probably very rare.
Sometimes the lesions can become irritated, inflamed, and infected by bacteria. If this occurs, consult a doctor to discuss the need for antibiotics. Besides, lesions involving the eyelids may be associated with conjunctivitis (pink eye) and require special treatment.
Treatment for molluscum contagiosum is not always mandatory. The lesions often disappear by themselves and heal without scarring unless infected by bacteria. Removal of lesions reduces the rate of spread to other people as well as from one part of the body to another, which happens by touching the lesions (called autoinoculation). Genital lesions in adults should be treated in order to prevent spread through sexual contact.
The most popular treatments are scraping of the lesions (called curettage) or removal using heat (called cautery) or cold (called cryotherapy). Unfortunately, there are few adequate and non invasive molluscum treatments. Surgically removing molluscum or using acids for molluscum treatment, as commonly prescribed, are traumatic and not always effective.
Skin is comprised of the epidermis (outer layers), and the dermis which is referred to as the true skin (inner layers). The epidermis has 7 layers which protect and surrounds the true skin. Because the true skin is the reservoir of nourishment, it is the area where most dermatological problems begin and where the root of a molluscum resides. This is why surgery as molluscum contagiosum treatment is highly invasive; it must dig deep through all dermal layers.
As the antiviral properties AntiMolluscum-Rx have the demonstrated ability to penetrate all layers of the skin and thoroughly eradicate molluscum infections, these active ingredients in our treatment for molluscum have received considerable attention from the National Academy of Sciences and medical professionals on a global scale.
Viruses exhibit rapid rates of mutation which can make immunity difficult to sustain. Once a cell is infected it is difficult to selectively inhibit the virus without harming the host cell (human tissue). As a result, research on possible molluscum treatments have focused on plants as strong allies in restoring immune strength and inhibiting the spread of viral diseases.
Some of the most impressive results consistently achieved in medicinal plants are in the elimination of viruses. The antiviral activity of our signature molluscum treatment, AntiMolluscum-Rx, is well documented and principally due to its direct virucidal effects.
