    • 1). Click "Start," then "Control Panel."

    • 2). Open the Modems section of the Control Panel. Find your modem on the list. Right-click on it and click "Properties."

    • 3). Write down your default settings. You will want to have these in case your changes do not work and you wish to go back to your original settings.

    • 4). Look at the Maximum Speed setting, and change it to 115200 bps. Uncheck the box that reads "Only connect at this speed." Your default modem setting will most likely be set for 9600 bps, which can rob you of bandwidth.

    • 5). Click the Connection tab near the top of the window and make the following modifications to settings: Change "Data bits" to 8, change "Stop bits" to 1 and change "Parity" to none.

    • 6). Select the Port Settings button, and ensure that the slider for Receive Buffer is on the High setting.

    • 7). Click on the Advanced button, write down your default settings, and then make the following modifications to your settings: Check the "Compress Data" setting, check "Use flow control" setting and change the "Software [XON/XOFF]" option to be blank.

    • 8). Click OK to exit the modem settings window and attempt to connect to the Internet with your dialup modem. You may need to connect several times to get an accurate sense of whether your modem's speed has increased or not.
