How to Make a Car Safer

104 6
    • 1). Replace your tires with brand new ones to make it safer. The deeper the tread on the tire, the better the car will be able to turn corners and stop, even in bad weather. Also, make sure you maintain the suggested pressure in your tires at all times (see your car manual for the exact pressure)--under and overinflation are common reasons for tire failure and blowouts.

    • 2). Get a car tune up as suggested by your car manual (usually every 35,000 to 65,000 miles.) The service professional will check your rotors, fuel filter, air filter, caps and spark plugs, among other elements. A tune-up assures that your engine and fuel injection system is working properly, and helps you to avoid distressing situations while you are on the road.

    • 3). Purchase ceramic brakes instead of the standard semi-metallic brakes for your car. Ceramic brakes last longer and are more durable than the traditional types. They allow you to stop more quickly and abruptly in case of a sudden disruption on the road.

    • 4). Buy a seat belt cutter that doubles as a tool to break your window in case of an emergency. Keep the cutter connected to your dashboard with a piece of Velcro or in your middle compartment for quick access.

    • 5). Keep a car safety kit in your car when you're on the road. This includes road flares, distress signs, jumper cables, a first aid kit, tire inflator product and common tools you'll need to fix your car in case of a problem. You can create a kit yourself by picking up the items separately from an auto parts or convenience store.
