    Flower Hands

    • Have the children trace their hand on a piece of construction paper and cut it out. Then they can decorate it however they want. Make sure each child puts their name or initials on the cut-out. Collect them all, then put them in order from largest to smallest. Take each one and spread them out, putting some with thumbs facing opposite ways until the hands look like one big flower. Staple this collection to a bulletin or other board. Decorate with cut-out leaves, if you wish.

    Magazine File Craft

    • Have each child bring in a large, empty cereal box. Help them use a ruler to mark from one top edge of the box to the other side, about 2 inches from the top. This will make the mark look like a long slope. Carefully have them cut on the slope, then turn the box around and do the same on the other side to make both sides open and even. This creates a slanted open-top box that looks just like the magazine holders found in office supply stores. It can be used to store magazines, books or files.

Have the children decorate as they please, since they will be using this during the year for themselves. Construction paper, old wrapping paper and stickers are all fun ideas for decorating. They can either use it at school or take it home to use.

    Time Capsule

    • Give each child an empty Pringles can. If these are not available, a small box will also do. Have children decorate the outside however they like with crayons and stickers. Then have them fill the "time capsule" with any goodies they like, such as a favorite toy, a drawing or a picture of their family. Each child should tell the class why they chose these items for their capsule. At the end of the year, have children open their capsules and discuss if they missed the items and why they still may be significant.

    School Notes Clip Magnet

    • Take a clothespin and glue a small magnetic strip on one side. Pass one out to each child and have them paint or color the rest of the clothespin however they would like. While it dries, pass out a 3 x 4 card and let the children decorate that as well. Once the clothespin is dried, glue the card to the front of it. Now the children can take this home and put it on their refrigerator to hold school notes and announcements.
