How to Adjust a Yamaha Flute
- 1). Pick up the flute's long body section by the edges--never by the keys--with your left hand. Next pick up the head joint, the top section with the mouthpiece, with the right hand.
- 2). Hold the body in your left hand near the top, away from the keys. Insert the head joint into the top end, leaving 1/4-inch of the unplated section visible.
- 3). Line up the mouthpiece opening, called the embouchure, with the keys in the body section after inserting.
- 4). Keep the flute in your left hand, and pick up the end piece of the flute, called the foot joint, in your right hand.
- 5). Join the foot joint to the rest of the flute. Line up the foot joint post to the center of the last key on the flute body section.
- 6). Tune the flute by gently twisting the unplated section of the head joint into the flute body. Play the flute to check the tone after every adjustment.
- 1). Check the head joint cork for damage or replacement by loosening the head joint crown, the domed piece at the top of the head joint.
- 2). Push the cleaning rod up inside the head joint as if cleaning until it hits the cork. Gently push the cork out the top of the head joint. Check the cork for cracks or discoloring.
- 3). Adjust the head cork using the screw by turning the cork, not the crown. Replace the head cork by gently sliding back into place.
- 4). Check the body and foot joint key pads for signs of flattening, discoloring or wear.
- 5). Fix sticky key pads easily using Yamaha cleaning paper. Take a piece of Yamaha cleaning paper and place it under the key's pad. Hold the key down on the paper for a few seconds, then release the key so it is open. Remove the cleaning paper only after releasing the key.
