How to Make a Mario Bros. Lucky Star Centerpiece
- 1). Plan the design of a papier-mache lucky star centerpiece. Consider whether you want to make just one, such as for a refreshment table at a party, or if you want to make multiple lucky star centerpieces for larger gatherings. Account for the amount of time you have to invest in making or assembling centerpieces. Recruit kids to help make the stars and turn it into a family activity.
- 2). Create your lucky star shapes out of twisted and crumpled aluminum foil and wrap them in duct tape to create a smooth surface. Print out a picture of a Super Mario lucky star as a guide for your star's proportions. Provide work gloves for children to prevent cuts from sharp foil edges, or limit shaping the stars to adults.
- 3). Papier-mache the duct tape-covered foil star with small strips of newspaper and the papier-mache paste recipe of your choice (see references section), usually a glue paste or a flour and water paste. Layer the newspaper strips and let dry. Depending on your time availability, make several layers of newspaper strips, letting each dry thoroughly before applying the next.
- 4). Buff the surface of your papier-mache star gently with fine sandpaper when it has dried completely to smooth it for painting. Sketch eyes in pencil and apply yellow paint everywhere else, adding eyes with black and white paint. Let the paint dry thoroughly. Spray with varnish, if desired.
- 5). Group the completed papier-mache lucky star with character figurines, like Yoshi, Luigi and Princess Peach, for a centerpiece tableau, or nestle your finished craft amid a low-standing cluster of blue Super Mario cloud-patterned balloons (available at party supply retailers).
