How to Test Grout for Sealer
- 1). Fill a spray bottle with water at room temperature.
- 2). Spray a section of tile, making sure that the grouted areas have been moistened.
- 3). Wait three seconds and look closely at the wet tile.
- 4). Note the condition of the tile. If the grouted areas have darkened, they are absorbing water and you should plan to add sealer. Soaked grout means that either the original sealer has broken down or no sealer was ever applied. If the grout remains the same color and the water forms beads or tiny droplets before dripping down the surface of the tile, then the tile is properly sealed.
- 5). Dry the tile with a sponge. If the test indicated that sealer is needed, you may begin the application an hour after performing the test.
