The Value of Antique Linen Bedding
- Although an heirloom consisting of a plain, undecorated set of linen bedding might have strong sentimental associations, collectors unacquainted with its history will tend to view it as little more than second-hand bedclothes. Therefore, it has little resale value.
- Generally associated with doilies, crochet is a process for creating loose, airy fabrics with cream-colored yarn. Bed covers with inset crochet panels or pairs of pillows with crochet edging will appeal to collectors to the tune of $50 or so as of 2010.
- Check the corners of bedsheets and pillowcases for hand-stitched embroidery, especially in brightly colored silk thread. Pretty floral motifs will catch the eye of collectors. A pair of embroidered pillowcases should retail in the region of $60 as of 2010. A heavily embroidered sheet will be worth much more than one with just a few licks of color.
- By far the most valuable item associated with linen bedding is the antique patchwork quilt. Often with a linen backing, these labors of love created by stitching together "patches" of odd fabrics can easily command prices in excess of $200 as of 2010.
- None of these items will be very marketable unless they are in crisp, vibrant condition. Tired, worn and faded linen bedding is best left in the blanket box.
