Iron vs. Stainless Steel Grills

    Cleaning

    • Iron grills by far are the easiest to clean and maintain; only requiring a soak in hot water, and a quick scrub with a scouring pad and mild soap. For maintenance coat the grill in oil; this will stop it from rusting. Stainless steel requires a lot of TLC when it comes to keeping it clean. One of the easiest ways to maintain the shine of stainless steel is to buy a cover for the grill. This will keep the elements from causing corrosion or rust. Never use steel wool or metal for cleaning; it will scratch the finish. Instead opt for a stainless steel cleaner (available in most stores) and avoid cleanser at all costs.

    Grilling

    • When it comes to a great BBQ, both grills are adequate and both give good results. The only difference of the two is that iron grills are old fashioned, and give those thick char lines that stainless steel grills can't. Stainless steel grills can serve as a non-stick option, whereas food gets stuck often to iron grills, if they aren't pre-oiled.

    Heat

    • If you want a grill that will retain heat for a long time, it would be iron. Iron grills heat slowly, but hold heat well. They also conduct heat evenly throughout the grill. Stainless steel on the other hand will heat up, eventually, but will not retain the heat after the grill is off, or the fire is out. Both will do, but stainless steel will take a bit longer to finish the job.

    Price

    • Grill prices vary wildly depending on what store you order them from, which size the grill is, and from which location. On average, stainless steel grills costs between $79 and $1,000. The lower price is for a basic stainless steel grill, and the higher price is for a jumbo gas stainless steel grill. Iron grills average between $200 and $1,000.

    Special Considerations

    • When buying a grill keep in mind what you'll be using it to grill (meat, fish or veggies), how long you want to keep it, how often you will need to use it and how quickly you want your food cooked.
