How to Add Shock Pool Treatment to Well Water

104 45
    • 1). Warn everyone in the home, or users of the well water, not to use the well water while you are treating it with liquid pool shock treatment. Arrange for other drinking water to be available so that no one forgets about the warning and uses the well water for human consumption.

    • 2). Clean the well head access area with a wet sponge. Use a 10:1 mixture of water and shock treatment mixed in a plastic bucket. Wipe down all reachable areas with the mixture, including the well head, well house and storage tank and any other accessible interior surfaces.

    • 3). Calculate the standing water capacity, or storage capacity of your well. Storage capacity is calculated by multiplying the depth of your well in feet by the gallons of water held per foot in the well pipe. Four-inch well pipes store .7 gallons per foot; 6- and 8-inch well pipes store 1.5 and 2.5 gallons per foot respectively. Multiply your well depth by your well pipe per foot capacity to determine your well storage capacity.

    • 4). Pour approximately 3 pt. (48 oz.) of pool shock treatment into your well for every 100 gallons of well storage capacity calculated. Round all calculations up to the next 100 gallons; for example, treat 360 gallons as 400 gallons.

    • 5). Hook up a garden hose to an outdoor water faucet near the well access head, and point the hose into the well. Turn the faucet on, and let it run until you smell the shock treatment coming from the hose. Turn off the faucet.

    • 6). Open all faucets inside the house, and let them run until you smell the shock treatment from each faucet. Turn them off. Flush each toilet several times.

    • 7). Wait 24 hours. Run all hoses, faucets and toilets until the shock treatment smell is completely gone. The well water is now clean and ready for use.
