Home Remedies for Hair Product Buildup

Hair spray, mousse, gel, conditioner, hair dye--women and men use a lot of products to keep their hair looking great. Unfortunately, these products can be problematic for the hair and scalp if they're not completely washed out. There are a variety of home remedies that can help with hair product build-up, according to Reader's Digest. - Baking soda can be used to cleanse your scalp and scrub away buildup from products. Reader's Digest recommends mixing 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of shampoo together to make a scalp cleanser. Work it into a lather and scrub your scalp before rinsing your hair clean. This can be done up to twice weekly, however, baking soda can lighten your hair, so use it with caution.
- According to Planet Green, apple cider vinegar can strip away product residue and it even helps prevent future build-up. Shampoo your hair as normal, then rinse with 1 quart of warm water and 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar. This remedy should only be done once a month to avoid damaging hair.
- Reader's Digest also recommends using lemon juice to to cleanse the hair of product residue and get rid of dandruff. Massage 2 tablespoons of lemon juice onto your scalp and rinse with water. Then, rinse your hair with a mixture of 1 cup water and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. This remedy may be used daily.
- Getting hairspray and other styling products off surfaces they have dried on can be difficult. Fabric softener can help loosen dried on styling products to make them easier to clean up. Mix 1/2 cup of fabric softener and 1 cup of water in a spray bottle, shake well, spray on surfaces that need cleaning and polish dry with a soft cloth.
