A well-known hill station in Satara district of the Indian state, Maharashtra, Mahabaleshwar is among those few places in the country where tourists can enjoy a pleasant climate throughout the year. They would also find plenty of things to do in Mahabaleshwar during their time spent in this region. During the colonial era, it used to be a favourite place of many British officers looking for an ideal spot to escape the uncomfortable heat of summers. It is located at an altitude of 4,718 feet and is close to major cities like Pune and Mumbai. The name 'Mahabaleshwar' literally translates as 'God of great power', and the hill station is a place from where Gayatri, Koyna, Venna, Krishna and Savitri rivers originate. One can get a touch of spirituality while visiting its ancient temples that continue to amaze both devotees and tourists, even today.

Mahabaleshwar temple is one of these ancient temples, which offers an extremely calm and peaceful environment for its visitors. An object symbolizing Lord Shiva called 'Shivalinga' in this temple, is considered most sacred among the others found across the country. It is also referred by the Hindus as 'Trigunatmaka', a symbol that represent Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. This temple comprises of a sanctum and main hall. It also has a raised, square-shaped platform, on which, the great Maratha king known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is believed to have weighed his mother in gold. Next to Mahabaleshwar Temple is Atibaleshwar Temple, which houses the statue of 'Nandi', the holy cow. A short walk from Mahabaleshwar temple takes visitors to Panchganga Temple. It is believed that Koyna, Savitri, Krishna, Gayatri, and Venna rivers originate from the water spouting out from a stone-carved cow's mouth. A small trail behind this temple leads visitors to the Krishnabai Temple, which has a marvellous statue of Goddess Krishnabai and a 'Shivalinga'. This ancient temple has gathered moss and is mostly in ruins today, but its stone-carved ceilings and columns have stood the test of time. Krishnabai Temple is visited by very few tourists, and this is the reason why it seems quite isolated.

For those travelling by air, Pune Airport would provide an easy access to Mahabaleshwar with the help of cabs. People who prefer trains can reach the hill station from Wathar station. Tourists from neighbouring cities like Mumbai and Pune can hire a private vehicle and drive down to Mahabaleshwar, enjoying some of the most fantastic views on the way. The resorts in Mahabaleshwar offer well-furnished rooms and suites to the tourists for a highly comfortable stay. All the modern facilities are provided in them for guests, such as, comfortable air-conditioning, LCD satellite television, mini bar, and an excellent room service. Some of the popular resorts have wonderful amenities like kids' play area and discotheque. They also have a multi-cuisine restaurant in them, which includes mouth-watering varieties of local as well as other popular cuisines. The elegant ambience of such restaurants is enough to set the mood for a great dining experience.
