How to Check Out Books

104 52
    • 1). Visit your local public library. Use its computerized system to find books by title, author, keyword or subject. If the library does not have its titles digitally stored, look up the books by title or author in its card catalog system. If you need assistance, ask for help at the information desk or in the reference department. After you’ve located the titles in which you’re interested, write down their call numbers.

    • 2). Find your books in their specific sections by using their call numbers. Library books are organized by the Dewey Decimal System, under the following call-number ranges and categories: General Knowledge (000s), Psychology and Philosophy (100s), Religion and Mythology (200s), Social Sciences and Folklore (300s), Languages and Grammar (400s), Math and Science (500s), Medicine and Technology (600s), Arts and Recreation (700s), Literature (800s) and Geography and History (900s).

    • 3). Apply for a library card, if you do not have one already. You usually can receive a library card at the circulation or information desk the same day you apply for one. Most libraries require a photo ID such as a drivers license or state-issued ID. You might also have to show proof of your current address with a utility bill. If you’re applying on behalf of a minor, also be prepared to show your ID.

    • 4). Take your library card and books to a circulation clerk, who will check out your books. Often, libraries issue patrons printed receipts with each book’s title and due date, but sometimes they stamp the due date on a card that they tuck into a pocket inside the book‘s front or back cover. Be sure to check the due date for each book carefully so that you won’t incur fees for returning it late.
