Original Parade Ideas
- Celebrate local pets by honoring them with a parade. Encourage community members to join the parade lineup with their household pets for a day of furry, four-legged fun. Even if people have animals that can't be walked, like snakes or birds, tell them to tote them along in a wagon. For extra silliness, people can dress up their pets in costumes or cute outfits. Advertise the event several weeks in advance to boost participation and spectator turnout. Instead of throwing candy, throw individually wrapped pet treats to the crowd. Consider turning the event into a fundraiser for the local animal shelter by charging a small entry fee for pets that join the parade.
- Who says you have to wait for Halloween to roll around to have a creepy parade? Host a zombie parade any time of the year, and encourage local citizens to come out in full walking dead makeup and attire to moan and groan their way through the streets. Host a tutorial on making convincing zombie makeup before the parade so everyone can look their best and spookiest on the day. Make sure you advertise the event in your community so no one becomes panicked at the sight of zombies roaming the streets. Consider playing fun songs like "Thriller" by Michael Jackson to lighten the mood.
- A flash mob is a choreographed dance routine performed by many people in public, usually with no prior notice for a surprise effect. Use this technique for an unusual, entertaining parade idea. Ask permission to use certain streets before you attempt the flash mob so that no cars will pose a threat to participants' safety, but other than that, keep the event very hush hush. Get together with the parade group participants beforehand to practice a dance routine, and then plan to meet up in a specific location to begin your parade and perform what will hopefully be the flash mob dance of a lifetime.
- Put the spotlight on international cultures with a special parade. Ask community members to celebrate their heritage by joining the parade. Participants should represent their culture by wearing traditional outfits or creating country-themed floats. Toss international treats into the crowd, such as country-specific candies or various small trinkets that represent each culture present in the parade. Play traditional music from each group's homeland, or simply play a variety of world national anthems.
