Despite the sprawling urban environment of Baltimore, Frederick, and greater Washington D.C., Maryland is predominantly rural. The national and state parks of Maryland provide countless hiking opportunities, including 40 miles of the Appalachian Trail and 37 miles of the Assateague Island National Seashore. With such a wealth of resources, it is no surprise that hiking clubs are active in the state. Maryland hiking clubs are social clubs that organize hiking trips and promote the preservation of wilderness areas. - Maryland Outdoor Club is a non-profit organization for adults who want to be involved in outdoor activities. The club provides opportunities for individuals with any level of experience to come together and participate in non-competitive outdoors events in and around Maryland. Hikes currently offered by the club include a 6 mile loop in Patapsco Valley State Park, an urban hike through waterfront neighborhoods of Baltimore and an excursion to White Mountain in New Hampshire. Members create a personal profile on the club website. Although there are no membership fees, many activities have participation fees to cover expenses.
