Camping Rucksack and the Importance of Choosing the Right One

103 39
A camping rucksack can be one of the most vital pieces of camping equipment you can invest in.
If you're going on a hiking trip, you should never take for granted that a rucksack is just a rucksack.
If you're going to be hiking across miles of wild terrain, then you need to ensure that your camping rucksack isn't going to let you down.
There are many things you need to take into consideration when shopping for your rucksack.
The first, and probably most important thing, is your equipment.
What do you intend to take with you? This will determine the size of rucksack you should be looking at.
Their sizes are usually stated in litres, for example 60L, or 90L - with the latter being the largest of the two.
Once you know what size you're after, then you can start looking at specific attributes that will benefit you whilst hiking.
Take note of the strap system on the back.
If you're going to be carrying this as you hike over that mountain, then you need to make sure that you can carry it securely and comfortably.
The last thing you want is to struggle with your luggage because your choice in rucksack was the wrong one.
So, make sure it fits well.
Are the straps adjustable to different body shapes? Does it allow you to distribute its weight evenly, or is it likely to give you a bad back? A handy feature to look for is a lumbar support strap.
This gives your back the proper support it needs whilst carrying your rucksack, reducing the risk of injury and strain.
Another feature is a sternum strap.
This strap runs across your chest, pulling the two shoulder straps closer together and relieving the strain from not only your back, but also your shoulders.
Another strap should attach around your hip region, to help take some of the weight.
Some rucksacks, especially the larger ones, can sometimes rise quite high above your head.
This can sometimes cause balance issues whilst hiking.
If this is the case with the bag you're looking at, make sure it has adjustable height straps to bring the top end in and prevent you from overbalancing and causing more unnecessary strain.
Just by ensuring your camping rucksack has an adequate strap system can make all the difference whilst hiking.
Obviously rucksacks will differ in design.
Some provide you with more pockets than others, and some enable the bottom end to be unzipped, allowing you easy access to the luggage from both ends.
Some even have loops on the outside so that you can hook extra luggage to, luggage that you can't fit inside or prefer to keep separate.
But all this is down to person preference.
The most important thing to think about whilst choosing is the strap system.
It's really not a good idea to be stuck on the side of a mountain with a heavy rucksack that your body can no longer carry.
If your camping rucksack has an adequate strap system then your hiking trip will be made a lot easier, a lot more comfortable, and a lot more enjoyable and successful.
