How to Get Brown Spots Out of Grass
- 1). Determine what most likely caused the brown spots. Common culprits are too much fertilizer, dog urine, overwatering, foot traffic or a grass disease known as "brown patch."
- 2). Switch to liquid or organic fertilizer with low nitrogen levels if too much fertilizer is the culprit. Water the brown spots regularly, and plant new grass seed after a month if green grass hasn't started to sprout.
- 3). Hose down the area where your dog urinates to rinse it thoroughly. This will dilute the nitrogen---which causes the brown spots---and water the area at the same time. Reseed if after a month if you notice no new growth of grass.
- 4). Aerate brown spots caused by foot traffic. This is accomplished by poking the ground with a garden fork and loosening the soil. Then, water it each day until new grass starts to grow.
- 5). Reseed areas with brown spots that are caused by too much water. Overwatering kills the roots, so reseeding is the only solution.
- 6). Add a fungicide to the brown spots if they're caused by brown patch. This will be clear because the brown spots will be perfect rings surrounded by green grass. After the grass recovers, keep it well-fertilized and watered to prevent another flair up of brown patch.
