How to Teach English in the United Kingdom
- 1). Visit the British Council website at britishcouncil.org and click on the "Learning" tab located on the cross-bar menu. Click on the "Teaching English" option offered first in the list format.
- 2). Decide whether teaching English as a first language or a second language is the best choice for you. The British Council accepts applications for both, but keeps them as separate applications, as the process and evaluations are different.
- 3). Locate the "Help and Support" list on the right hand side of the website. Click on the FAQ link provided. Once it loads, browse the list. Depending on the applicant's academic background, some answers may be more applicable than others.
- 4). Locate the "I am a teacher of English. What courses/exams can I take" question and click on it. Click on the "Certifications" tab under the list provided.
- 5). Determine whether the Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) or the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Cert. TESOL) is appropriate for the applicant. This is in part based on the preferences and the academic background of the applicant.
- 6). Click on the "Current Vacancies" tab located in the cross-bar menu. Read the website when it has loaded. Make sure to have all of the information ready to make a profile. To quickly browse through available vacancies, click on the link at the end of the requirements.
- 7). Browse through the available postings. Note that the British Council also has postings for international jobs, including teaching positions in South America and Europe.
- 8). Click on the application form located on the top of the vacancies list. It will open in Microsoft Word. Fill out the form, outlining the appropriate academic backgrounds, certificate and any other information, such as volunteering that may benefit the application. Make sure you write down the appropriate job posting number and location.
- 9). Save the completed form on the computer and scan diplomas or certifications to prove what is stated in the application. Unless otherwise stated in the position description, send the completed form and relevant documents to teachthere@britishcouncil.org. The position for which you're applying should be stated in the subject header of the email message.

Await a reply from the British Council. Be advised that some applications can take months to process, so be patient. Once the answer is returned, accommodations and more information will be made available to the candidate, should he or she choose to accept the teaching position.
