Homemade Birdbaths
- Using flowerpots of different sizes allows you to create a simple birdbath. Terracotta flowerpots work well. After you determine the height you want for your birdbath, stack the flowerpots on top of one another until you reach the desired height. Plumber's caulk can seal the pots together. A large terracotta dish on top of the stack of pots serves as the birdbath's bowl, and plumber's caulk secures it to the stack of pots. An alternative to stacking the flowerpots inside one another is to turn every other flowerpot to its open end so that tops of flowerpots touch tops of other flowerpots and flowerpot bottoms touch bottoms of other flower pots.
- Using a large leaf, such as a rhubarb, sunflower or banana leaf, you can create a birdbath made of concrete. Placing your chosen leaf on top a pile of sand helps the leaf hold its shape. Cover the leaf with a wet concrete mix. After the concrete dries, remove the leaf. Place the finished product either directly on the ground or on a store-bought pedestal. Alternatively, make your own pedestal with concrete and a cardboard tube from a hardware store.
- Making your own design for a birdbath requires little more than a pile of sand and concrete. Make a sand-cast birdbath begins with mounding a bag of playground sand into the shape you desire for the birdbath. Then cover the shape in plastic wrap before adding concrete mix to the top. After the concrete dries, the birdbath is ready for use.
- Birdbaths created from any method can be decorated using craft supplies to add details. Acrylic paints can decorate the exterior of terracotta flowerpot birdbaths with your own designs or patterns. In addition, acrylic paints add color to the inside and/or outside of concrete birdbaths. You also may use tinted concrete for coloring when making concrete birdbaths.
Another option is to use colored stones or beads. Attach stones or beads to the exterior of terracotta flowerpot birdbaths. Press beads or stones into concrete when it is still wet as you make concrete birdbaths.
Colored tiles inside the dish of a terracotta birdbath makes a mosaic.
