5 Reasons You Don"t Have Your US Passport Renewal Yet
Even if you apply for expedited service with your US passport renewal, one mistake in the application process can cause delays in processing. To help you avoid making these errors, here are the top 5 reasons why your US passport renewal could be delayed:
You didn't sign the application. Passport renewal applications must be signed. The signature line is located on page 2 of the application, directly below the box where you staple your photos.
Your passport photos didn't pass muster. All passport photos have to meet certain criteria. For example, the area from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head must measure between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches. Make sure you have a natural expression on your face-now is not the time to try to perfect your own version of Zoolander's "Blue Steel." The photos must be in focus and cannot be overexposed, and must be printed on photo quality paper. For more details, see the Department of State's website. If they don't meet standards, your passport renewal application will be delayed.
Your check was for the wrong amount or was made out incorrectly. To ensure you're paying the right amount, you may wish to verify what you need to pay by calling the National Passport Center. Checks must be made out to "US Department of State," no abbreviations allowed.
You didn't include documents to support a name change. If your name has changed since the last time you were issued a passport, you must include a court order or marriage certificate to support the name change. If you don't have these documents, you must apply in person at a post office or another passport acceptance facility.
You owe back child support. Under the Passport Denial program, if you owe $2,500 or more in back child support, you are not eligible to receive a US passport renewal until you make payments to bring what you owe under that amount.
