Did Abingdon Pottery Make a Wishing Well Planter?

104 93

    Types

    • Abingdon created cookie jars, teapots, oil lamps, pitchers, vases, candle holders, dinnerware, statues, bookends, flower pots, small animal figurines and, yes, planters. Item sizes ranged from approximately 24 by 15 inches to 2.5 by 1.5 inches. In all, more than a thousand designs are known to exist.

    Identification

    • Abingdon glazes included gloss and matte, crazed, crystalline, lustrous and mottled, some with unusual textures. They introduced new colors every spring and fall. Pigments in tones of red, blue, yellow, pink, green, brown, black, white and gray created 150 different shades. A blue underglaze identifier marks most items, but some paper labels were also used. Of the different marks, most bear the Abingdon name.

    Speculation

    • It is certain that other artware companies made wishing well planters. By comparing glazes, colors, sizes and designs of known Abingdon pieces, and eliminating the possibility that the item in question is a known McCoy, USA or other pottery's wishing well planter, an educated guess can be formed. However, without expert testimony and lacking mark or label, provable identification would remain elusive.
