How to Change a Fender Jazzmaster Guitar String
- 1). Tune the existing strings on the guitar to pitch using a chromatic tuner. This will ensure that the guitar stays as closely in tune as possible throughout the string changing process.
- 2). Remove the low E string by unwinding it from the tuning peg. It's common to cut the string off while tuned to pitch with side cutters but this can cause a neck to twist due to the rapid change in pressure on the neck. Unwinding the string takes a few seconds more but will keep the neck stable. Once the string is unwound it can be pulled out through the back of the vibrato.
- 3). Replace the low E string by threading it through the back of the vibrato and into the tuning peg. Using the chromatic tuner, tune the low E string to pitch and then correct the tuning on the A,D,G,B and high E strings. They will likely be a little flat after replacing the low E string.
- 4). Complete steps two and three for the A,D,G,B and high E strings. It's important to tune all of the strings after each string is replaced to keep consistent tension on the vibrato springs throughout the string changing process. This prevents all of the strings from becoming slack which prevents an hours' worth of tuning to get each string to stay at pitch.
