How to Remove & Install a Shower Door & Panels

    Removing Doors

    • 1). Remove the door panels by lifting them out of the tracks. Remove the outside panel first, pushing it up to lift and tilting it toward you, so the rollers on the bottom and top of the panel come out of the tracks. Repeat to remove the inside panel.

Remove the screws that fasten the side jambs into the wall. Use a screwdriver to unscrew and a claw hammer to pry the screws out.

    • 3). Cut away the caulk. Use a utility knife to cut the caulk that joins the jamb to the wall on the inside and outside of the jamb. Lay a drop cloth in the tub to catch the debris.

    • 4). Remove the top track by tapping up on the track with your hammer.

    • 5). Remove the jambs from the left and right walls. Place a putty knife in the cut you just made along the outside caulk line and tap with a hammer to loosen. Move the putty knife and tap along the entire line you've cut in the caulk until the jamb comes loose. Pull the jamb away from the wall. Repeat steps 1 through 4 to remove all the jambs for the bottom track.

    • 6). Scrape away the excess caulk on the walls and bottom ledge. Use the putty knife and scrape the caulk away in a downward motion. Keep the blade flush with the surface, so you don't scratch the surface.

    Installing the Door Mountings

    • 1). Measure the width of your shower opening (corner to corner) and mark the measurement on the bottom of the shower door track with a grease pencil. This is where you will place the track. Place a level on the bottom ledge to make sure the ledge is level. The bubble should be in the center of the level.

    • 2). Cut the track. Place the track in a miter box (this holds the track steady) and cut with a hacksaw. Wear safety glasses when cutting.

    • 3). Place the track on the bottom ledge. The high side of the track goes on the outside of the ledge, so water won't splash out onto the floor. Make sure to leave an equal amount of room (about 3/16 inch) at each end of the track, so the wall tracks will fit flush with the bottom channel. Center the track on the bottom ledge and make sure it sits flat.

    • 4). File the underside edges of the track, if necessary, so the bottom and wall tracks fit snugly. The bottom track must also fit solidly against the tub.

    • 5). Secure the track to the bottom ledge with painters tape. Mark the position of the track on the bottom ledge using a grease pencil.

    • 6). Slide the wall tracks down over the bottom track. Make sure the wall tracks fit the bottom track exactly and are plumb with the wall (use your level to check). Use the file to file any edges, if necessary.

    • 7). Mark the mounting holes with your pencil. Mark the holes on the left and right tracks.

    • 8). Remove the tracks and mark your drilling spot with painters tape. Place the tape over the mark you've made for the mounting holes and mark the spot again on top of the tape. Taping the surface will help protect it from cracking when you drill.

    • 9). Nick the mounting hole drill spot with a center punch. Drill your mounting holes using a drill bit suitable for the surface of your shower (tile or Fiberglas). Be sure to wear safety glasses.

    • 10

Insert the wall anchors (if installing on tile) by tapping them gently into the mounting hole with a hammer. If installing on Fiberglas you won't need wall anchors.

    • 11

Remove the bottom track. Clean the walls and bottom ledge thoroughly with soap and water (be careful not to remove the markings for the bottom track) and let dry.

    • 12

Run a bead of caulk along the bottom ledge and replace the bottom track. Make sure you line it up with the markings, and the high side of the track is on the outside. Run another small bead of caulk on the outside edge.

    • 13

Install the wall tracks. Line them up with the mounting holes; make sure they fit over the corner of the bottom track. Slip the bumpers (provided with your door/panel kit) over the screws and secure with the screws provided.

    • 14

Measure and cut the top track using the same procedures as the bottom track.

    • 15

Fit the top track over the side tracks. File the corners of the top track, if necessary, to ensure a tight fit.

    • 16

Install the rollers on the door panels. Mount the nut attached to the rollers against the shower doors. For the outer panel, mount the rollers on the same side as the towel bar. For the inner sliding panel, mount the rollers on the opposite side.

    Installing the Doors

    • 1). Place the inside sliding door first. With towel bar and rollers facing in, hold the sides of the door and lift it up into the top rack and fit the top bottom rollers into the upper and lower tracks.

    • 2). Fit the clip in the slot under the bottom track, if your shower door kit came with clips. Tighten the other clip to the inside door panel with a screwdriver. Keep it fairly loose, so it can follow the slot in the track.

    • 3). Slide the panel to the wall track nearest the shower panel (shower head).

    • 4). Install the outside sliding door. With the towel bar facing out, lift the door from the sides and lift it up into the top rack and fit the top bottom rollers into the upper and lower tracks.

    • 5). Run a bead of silicone over both ends of the bottom and top tracks where they meet the wall tracks. Push the silicone into the crevice with your finger and wipe away the excess with a sponge. Wait 24 hours before using the shower.

Install the panel elbows (included with your panel) after turning off the water at the main. Have someone hold the panel in place and mark the screw holes with a grease pencil. Remove the panel, cover the marks with tape and remark the positions on top of the tape. Nick the mounting hole with a center punch and then drill with a 6 mm drill bit that's suitable for the wall surface. Make sure the elbow doesn't extend more than 1 1/4 inches from the wall.

    • 2). Install the anchors. Tap them gently into place with a hammer after removing the tape. Apply caulk around the anchors, wiping the excess away with your finger. Screw the panel to the top wall anchor. Have someone line the panel up with the mounting holes and hold the panel against the wall. Screw the panel to the top wall anchors with the screw provided. Secure the center and bottom screws and washers.

    • 3). Connect the supply hoses to the hot and cold supply elbows and inlet ports on the valve. These will be marked on the instructions included with your panel.

    • 4). Install the side seals on the front panel cover and push the cover into place. Install the diverter sleeve and handle (the lever that turns the water off and on) as instructed in the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 5). Turn on the water supply and test the connections by turning the water on at the diverter stem. Adjust as desired with a 2.5mm Allen wrench.
