Hardy Chinese Ground Orchid (Bletilla striata)

    • These finicky flowers will grow 12 to 24 inches high and produce flowers in late spring. In winter, the plant will die above ground, but if the bulb is protected by mulch or wood chips it will grow again in spring and bloom again. Chinese ground orchids come most commonly in shades of purple, but white flowers can also be found. The white forms may not be as hardy as purple flowers.

    Chinese Snowball Viburnum (Viburnum macrocephalum)

    • With dark green semi-evergreen leaves, the Chinese snowball viburnum grows up to 20 feet high and spreads 15 feet wide. The plant is easily pruned to become bush or shrub sized. This shrub is named for its showy round clusters of flowers, which bloom in late spring. The 8-inch-wide clusters will bloom in greenish color and soon change to pure white, giving them a snowball-like appearance.

    Chinese Privet (Ligustrum sinense)

    • Another Chinese semievergreen shrub, the Chinese privet, can grow up to 30 feet high. This plant is sold as an ornamental shrub in only 10 southern states in the United States, because it is an aggressive grower. Chinese privet grows well in shade and works well as an understory row for hedges. In spring, clusters of flashy white flowers bloom. Take measures to keep this aggressive grower from taking over the yard.

    Chinese Wisteria (Wisteria sinensis)

    • Chinese Wisteria, an aggressive climbing vine, can grow 30 feet high and spread 30 feet across. In the spring, blossoms appear before the plant's foliage buds. Chinese wisteria can blue, pink or purple flowers in addition to white blooms. Visit nurseries or gardening stores to obtain one that blooms in white. Chinese wisteria will climb any other plant or object near it, and as it is quick and aggressive when growing, it will need frequent pruning to keep it in bounds.

    Chinese Fringetree (Chionanthus retusus)

    • This small tree will grow 15 to 30 feet tall and spread 15 to 30 feet across. Requiring little maintenance, the Chinese fringetree prefers full sun, and in late spring and summer, feather-like white flowers will cover each limb. Fragrant flowers will bloom at the same time that the foliage opens. As it grows moderately slowly, the Chinese fringetree will need time to grow to full size. Female trees will grow bluish-black berries in the fall.
