DIY Rectangular Gazebo
- Decide the size of the project. A sketch is necessary to help determine the materials for the project. Remember when figuring out the amount of lumber needed that floor joists should be spaced 16 inches on center. Additionally, the posts for the sides should not be farther than 8 feet apart, on center. Make sure to purchase water treatment for the wood. It's best to treat all the lumber prior to any assembly. This will ensure proper coverage for all the lumber, and help to add years of life to the gazebo.
- Begin by assembling the floor structure. Start with the outside boards of the floor, then attach the box to the posts for the roof, and fill in the joists. Then install the flooring. For better airflow and drainage, leave space between the boards. The best thing to space the boards with is a 16 penny nail; use more than one nail to ensure the boards remain straight. Next build the roof: Install boards around the top of the posts to set the rafters on. Install the rafters, then sheath and shingle them. To add a different look to the roof, why not try wood siding for roof material, or even overlapping floor boards to create the roof. When the roof is complete, build and install the railings and seats. It is easier to build the railings before installing them in the gazebo. Once the railings are installed, build the seating in place for more strength. Don't forget to leave a space for an entrance.
