According to consumer electronics watchdog CNET, AVG is one of the most popular downloads for anti-virus programs. It offers free basic protection for your computer. The free program does have some limitations such as no technical support, no server protection, and limited languages that can run it. But it is good enough for your basic home computer system as it protects against spyware and computer viruses. It can be downloaded for free via its website (see Resources section below).
Avast is available for non-commercial home use only. It has anti-spyware built in, a simple user interface, web shield and web protection and a virus chest. It also offers automatic daily updates. It is a very simple program, and doesn't take up a lot of memory in your computer while it runs in the background. Avast Home Edition can be downloaded for free from its website (see Resources).
Ask a computer expert or anybody who has knowledge about computer software about the kind of anti-virus software you should get for your computer. Each system has different or special needs. Also be sure to read the fine print of any new anti-virus software that you download. While some programs are free, others do have trial periods, and then expect a fee to be paid to purchase the program for full use.
