Vacation Ideas in August
- Head off to the nearest body of water to cool off from the hot summer heat. If you live by the coast, try a trip to the ocean. Many places have campsites right on the beach that are inexpensive for families. Or, if you want a more romantic environment for just you and your partner, try a bed and breakfast with an ocean view. If the coast is too far away, head to a lake instead. Some lakes have houseboats you can rent for a few days or even a week. Others have campsites, and some even have hotels right on the water's edge. Check out what type of activities they offer for children, if you have kids. Alternately, find a place that is adult-friendly (perhaps with a spa, golfing and upscale restaurant) if you desire a quieter, kid-free vacation.
- August is the perfect time to head outdoors for an adventure vacation. If you have active teenagers, try heading to a dude ranch. Many offer activities such as horseback riding, white-water rafting or rock climbing. Or, pack up your gear and go on a week-long hike, camping along the way. Many national parks have hiking "loops" that take several days to complete.
- August is baseball season in America, and for baseball fanatics, there is no better vacation than to see your favorite team play -- over and over again. Channel your love of the all-American pastime into the ultimate baseball-lover's vacation. Travel with your team from a game at the home stadium to one or more of their road games. Rent an RV and stay at RV parks, or splurge on hotels near the stadiums. Ask around to find the best sports bars near each stadium (if you don't have children) so you can soak in the local culture.
- Head to a ski resort in August. While this may seem like a strange idea -- there is no snow in August at most resorts -- many have greatly reduced fares and special summer activities to lure visitors. The resorts are just as posh in the summer as they are in the winter, and much more inexpensive. Some even run their chairlifts so that you can take them to the top of the mountain and go hiking. Others plan fun family activities, including water slides down the mountain, bounce houses, wine tasting for adults and horseback riding.
