Extrinsic Motivation Definition

104 44

    Intrinsic

    • Rewards involve giving a child something that is intrinsically valuable. For instance, food has value by itself because it can be tasty and satisfying. Inner motivators drive a child to eat the food.

    Extrinsic

    • Extrinsic motivators are motivators that are put on a student extrinsically. Extrinsic motivation is dependent on intrinsic motivation because a student has to be motivated internally by something for the educator to place an external motivator on him.

    Positive

    • Extrinsic motivators can be positive, giving the student something as a reward such as awards and free time.

    Negative

    • Students can be motivated to behave in a certain way by punishing them through detention, timeout and scolding. Another way to place a negative extrinsic motivator is to take attention away from the child.

    Consequences

    • While extrinsic motivation works in the short run, children sometimes stop good behavior when the extrinsic motivation is removed. Children also don't learn how to think independently because they merely respond to motivators.
