How to Repair Stains in Prefinished Hardwood Floors
- 1). Start with a solution of water and detergent. Add enough detergent so the water is soapy. Scrub the stain with a sponge or scouring pad.
- 2). Rub the stain gently with steel wool.
- 3). Pour some mineral spirits onto a rag. Wipe the stained area with the rag. Mineral spirits are good for removing stains from crayons.
- 4). Dampen a rag with lacquer thinner. Blot the stain with the rag. Lacquer thinner is good for removing stains like nail polish.
- 5). Gently sand the stained area with fine-grain sandpaper. Sandpaper will work for stains that have penetrated the finish, but have not yet reached the wood. Only sand as deep as is necessary to remove the stain.
- 6). Clean the stain with a commercial wood cleaner. Wood cleaning products can easily be found in home improvement stores and come in a wide variety.
