Coping With Panic Attacks - Stopping Panic Before it Strikes

103 8
Coping with panic attacks requires many people to adjust their way of thinking dramatically.
All of us who have experienced panic attacks have heard folks tell us time and time again, "Don't let it get the best of you.
" And "You've got to fight this thing.
"  I would always respond, "Yeah, I know.
" So, fight I would!  Anytime I would feel a bout of anxiety coming my way, I would fight it.
Anytime I imagined I may be going to have a panic attack, I would fight.
Sometimes I would just recall a night I spent in the past when I suffered through panic.
I would even fight then! This, I thought was what coping with panic attacks was all about.
Then, one day it occurred to me fighting wasn't working.
So, I tried harder than ever to fight off panic.
When I tried this tactic, it seemed the panic became worse than ever.
Finally, I came to the conclusion, there is no way to become victorious over panic by fighting.
I Might as Well Give Up After giving much thought to the subject and actually taking a diary of my mindset during times panic was striking, here is what I found: Whenever I fought with panic, it won.
When I prepared myself for a panic attack, I was actually bringing one on.
The worse panic attacks occurred when I fought the hardest.
When I started to give thorough examinations to the physical manifestations panic attack brought on, the panic would start to lessen in severity.
So, what does all this mean and how can it help a person overcome anxiety and panic for good? First of all, it is either a lot of stress or our reaction to a small amount of stress that starts panic cooking within our systems.
Fighting, running from, or tightening up in an attempt to overcome panic compounds the original stress and even if it weren't so bad to begin with; our reaction to it brings the stress up to the level of panic.
In other words, if we never had an "Oh! My gosh!" or "Oh! No here it comes again!" moment in reacting to the way stress makes us feel, we would never have a full-fledged panic attack.
So, here is what I found works.
The Way to Make Panic Fight Itself Off ·         The next time someone suggests you fight this thing, tell him to blow it out his ear.
·         When you feel panic is approaching, don't tighten up and don't fight in any way.
In fact, invite the panic into your life instructing it that it is free to do whatever it wants to you.
Panic hates this because doing this takes away its biggest weapon, your fear of it.
·         During the attack, examine every physical sensation you are feeling.
Really think about everything you're feeling at the moment.
In the early going this is difficult to do but you can actually make panic disappear by doing this.
·         Finally, never pull back.
At panic's peak, surrender to it.
You will find panic can no longer survive without your fighting.
There is just no way it can!
