Video: How to Eat Healthy in a Dorm
Video Transcript
Hi, I'm Charlotte Lawson, a registered and licensed dietitian here in Tampa Bay, Florida. Now, if you just started school, and this is your first time in the dorms, you're probably wondering, "How in the world am I going to eat healthy, when everyday there's an unlimited supply of yummy, tasty food?" Try to practice portion control. I know it can seem overwhelming, especially those first few weeks, when all the smells look so tasty, and you're just in a new phase of trying things in general. But, portion control really is key, and hopefully, by exercising good portion control, you can avoid that freshman fifteen. Keep in mind that there's going to be new foods everyday, and you don't need to try every single thing on the menu the first time it's offered. Typically, establishments in a cafeteria at a dorm, for instance, go through a cycle menu. So, say, for instance, they offered two or three entrees on the same day, just choose one, and keep in the back of your head, knowing that that meal will probably be offered again in about a month. There's going to be another time to try it. Also, try to hit the salad bar first. I know it sounds cliche, but this is a great way to get your fruits and vegetables in, also something low calorie. And, it starts the stomach off with a little bit of substance, so you're less likely to overeat calories and something bad. Or maybe, you're not even going to be full to hit that dessert bar. Moderation really is key. If you need to splurge and hit the hot dog bar one day, load up on the chili and the cheese, but just make sure to eat a little bit lighter meal the next time. or, maybe go for a job later in the afternoon to combat those extra calories you took in. If you'd like to eat just inside your dorm, and you're wondering what kind of healthy snacks to have on hand, try to avoid things with added sugar, and added salt. I know it sounds a little bit hard to do, but you an find those products. Read your nutrition facts labels, and look for ingredients that actually have good nutrients. Try your canned fruits. Try some easy whole grain stuff you can pop into a toaster. There's good varieties out there, you just need to spend a little more time in searching. So, moderation is key. Try variety. Exercise your portion control, it's okay to taste a little, that's meal's going to be there again. And, try to aim for healthy snacks in the dorm as well. Hopefully, that'll get you through that first year of college, and avoid that freshman fifteen. I'm Charlotte, and eat happy.
