Bonding with Family Camping

103 27
"Kids today!" - Your grand parents said it, your parents said it and if you aren't all ready, you will say it.
It is no secret that this generation is in bigger trouble then the last.
They are fat, lazy, video game playing trouble makers.
Not your kids of course - because you know it takes more interaction to keep them on the straight and narrow.
Doing things together like Family camping.
When my son started in scouts over 3 years ago he balked at first.
He was 10 at the time so he didn't have much say so in the matter.
It just took a few monthly camping trips for him to realize that there is more to this work then what he sees on TV.
Shortly after that I became a Scout assistant, uniform and all.
I was able to go along on these camp outs and grew to love it all over again because as a kid, my family had a camper and we got to use it every few months.
The best part of this arrangement was that I was able to bring along my 8 year old daughter.
The 3 of us made this out family bonding time.
She was able to keep up with all the big boys as we all went on out nature hikes.
While my son learned form his troop, my duty was to read the make handbook and test the boys on the various merit badges.
With my daughter by my side, she picked all this stuff up also.
The three of us truly looked forward to the next camp out, rain or shine, summer or winter.
That was all part of the adventure.
The experience allowed me and my son to grow closer as I loosed my grip on his 'chain'.
In the controlled environment I was able to tell him to take a buddy and circle the park, climb a mountain, go catch a skunk.
You know, all the dumb stuff kids do.
But every one looked out for everyone else and he realized that I was just as strict or lenient with any of the other kids.
My daughter and I spent lots of time together while the scouts were studying or working on projects.
That gave us time to play games and do our own hiking time.
She was more then happy to show me all the stuff she had learned while on these trips.
This lasted for about a year and she was getting to old to tag along.
It was time for her to move on anyway.
When she joined the Girl Scouts, guess who was the leader of the troop...
That was three years ago, and just as I look back on my childhood and the family camping trips we had.
I know that the time I spend with my own two kids will not be forgotten.
After all, when you are out in the middle of no where with no electricity, there is little else to do besides grow closer as a family.
