Volvo Supports Alexs Lemonade Stand
Alexandria Alex Scott was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer, shortly before her first birthday. Her parents were told that if Alex beat her cancer, she probably wouldnt be able to walk. Two weeks later, Alex moved her leg. By her second birthday, she was able to crawl and stand with leg braces.
However within the next year, her tumors started growing again. In 2000, the day after her fourth birthday, she received a stem cell transplant. She told her mother, When I get out of the hospital I want to have a lemonade stand. She said she wanted to give money to the doctors so that they could help other kids, like they helped me. Later that year she held her first lemonade stand and raised $2,000 for the hospital. Alex continued to raise money as she battled cancer and others saw her determination and had their own lemonade stands to help her raise money.
She passed away in August of 2004 at the age of 8, having raised over $1 million for cancer research. Alexs family continues to honor her through Alexs Lemonade Stand Foundation. Supporters around the world hold their own lemonade stands to raise money for Alexs Lemonade Stand Foundation.
On Saturday, June 11, 2011, Alexs Lemonade Stand will return to Penn Wynne Elementary School in Alexs neighborhood of Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. This family event will have fun, food, games, and a butterfly release.
Volvo Cars will also be there to raffle off a brand new Volvo. Volvo wants to give back and help in the fight against childhood cancer. For the past two years, Volvo has raffled off a Volvo car for Alexs Lemonade Stand Foundation. After two successful raffles, Alexs Lemonade Stand will again offer participants a chance to win their choice of a brand new Volvo XC60, Volvo S60, or Volvo C70.
