    • 1). Consult the owners manual, which will typically have a troubleshooting section for reference and help. Based on clues obtained from the mower, such as power or no power, certain noises, and mechanical operation, the manual may be able to eliminate and pinpoint certain causes that may or may not be repaired by the owner.

    • 2). Make sure there is gas in the mower. Open the gas cap even if there is a gauge built into the cap. The gauge may stick or become inoperative, in which case a visual inspection of the tank is necessary. Also look into the tank to see if there is excessive sediment or a gum-like substance on the bottom of the tank. The presence of debris or gum may indicate a blocked fuel line. This will require the tank and line to be removed by a trained mechanic. Use a sealed flashlight to illuminate the tank, keep open flame away from gas fumes.

    • 3). Check to ensure the gear and parking brake are set, as indicated by the owners manual. The mower, depending on model, may have a switch built into the transmission, which must be engaged for the mower to start. This is a common mistake that leads many to believe there is a mechanical or electrical problem with the mower.

    • 4). Inspect the battery and connections for excessive corrosion. If the terminals or contacts are corroded, there may not be a good connection for the electrical current to travel to the starter or engine. While wearing gloves, carefully brush any corroded material from the terminals with a stiff bristle brush and tighten the connecting nut with a wrench.

    • 5). Check the oil level in the mower by removing the dipstick and checking the oil level markings on the stick itself. If the oil is low or below the recommended level, add oil to the engine by pouring down the fill tube. Refer to the owners manual for exact oil specifications.
