August"s Hottest Memes Are Photoshop Fabulous

106 17

The two best memes of August 2013 both came to us thanks to the creative folks over at Reddit. The subreddit Photoshop Battles thread is a veritable wellspring for new memes, and both of August's funniest meme offerings were birthed here. First came "Displeased Purple Bill Clinton," and then the incredibly viral "#1letterwrongmovie" burst online to make us laugh. Let's take a look at both.
Displeased Purple Bill Clinton

It all started when a Redditor submitted a funny photo a photo of "a very displeased, purple Bill Clinton" to the subreddit, r/funny.

The image featured former United States President Bill Clinton playing golf, it was pretty obvious that this image would soon go viral and become an instant classic. Dressed entirely in purple (yes, really!), the former pres must not have been doing so well on the links that day, because the expression on his face is entirely surly and, well, displeased. Before the day was out, the image had been passed on to the Photoshop Battles subreddit, and the memes started rolling in. Yet Another Clinton Meme

Clinton is no stranger to getting the meme treatment. In 2010, Clinton appeared on stage with a fatigued-looking President Barack Obama. Clinton's cheerful expression juxtaposed with Obama's exhausted expression inspired the Inappropriate Timing meme. The image macro was widely circulated throughout 2010 and 2011, and it still pops up online today.

More recently, Clinton inadvertently photobombed singer Kelly Clarkson during the 2013 Presidential Inaugeration. Clinton's mischievous facial expression makes this hilarious screenshot one of the greatest celebrity photobombs of all time, as well as a meme for the ages.

It's unclear whether this month's newest Clinton meme will have staying power, but it is certainly providing some excellent laughs regardless.

#1letterwrongmovie Is Trending on Twitter

The second meme of the month started on Reddit, but then took hold on Twitter and became the hottest trending topic of the month. Whereas in July, Twitter and Reddit were abuzz over another Reddit Photoshop Battle creation entitled, In The Way Guy, this month it's all about #1letterwrongmovie.

The premise behind this trend is that if you remove or change just one small letter in a movie title, the entire meaning is changed. Using celebrity Photoshops to redesign popular movie covers, creative Twitter and Reddit users came up with hundreds of funny new movie posters. Searching Twitter for the #1letterwrongmovie hashtag provided endless opportunities for laughter this week, with titles such as "Deer John," "28 Days Late," and "Foodfellas" gaining web notoriety.

Last month, July 2013, the concept of changing or removing one letter from a title was originated by Twitter user @darth, but instead of movies, they used book titles. Creating the hashtag #BooksWithaLetterMissing, tweets containing funny revisions of famous works of literature circulated for days. BuzzFeed has a good list of some of the best offerings from that Twitter game, including "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dad," "Jurassic Ark," and "The Divinci Cod."

Photoshop Makes Great Memes

This month's new memes continue a great trend of using Photoshop and other image editing software to manipulate books, films, and photos to create something brand new and funny. All it takes is creative minds, simple software, and the desire to make other anonymous web users laugh to start a brand new meme.
