October 16, 1821 - Albert Franz Doppler was born in Lemberg, formerly part of Austria. He was a flutist, co-founder of the Wiener Philharmonikder and Hungarian Philharmonic Orchestra.
October 17 - On this day in 1849, composer Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin died due to pulmonary tuberculosis. Also on this day in 1984, singer Alberta Hunter died in New York City.

October 18, 1893 - Composer Charles Gounod died in Saint-Cloud (near Paris).

He is especially known for his operas, particularly Faust, and the song "Ave Maria."

October 19, 1943 - Othello opened at the Shubert Theatre, with Paul Robeson playing the title role and Uta Hagen as Desdemona. The play ran a total of 295 performances.

October 20 - On this day in 1828, pianist/composer Clara Wieck Schumann performed publicly for the first time at Gewandhaus at the age of 9. Also on this day in 1901, composer Frank Churchill was born in Rumford, Maine. He is well known for his musical scores for animated films

October 21 - On this day in 1858, Orpheus in the Underworld was first performed at the Théâtre des Bouffes Parisiens in Paris. Also on this day in 1917, jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie was born in Cheraw, South Carolina. He was the youngest of 9 children; his parents were James and Lottie.

October 22 - On this day in 1811, composer Franz Liszt was born in Raiding, Hungary. His father was an amateur musician working for the Esterházy family. Also on this day in 1979, music educator/conductor Nadia Boulanger died in Paris.

Aside from Aaron Copland, some of her well-known students were Philip Glass, Qunicy Jones, Marc Blitzstein, Elliott Carter and Virgil Thomson.

October 23 - On this day in 1941, Benny Goodman recorded "Clarinet A La King." He was one of the most prominent figures of the Swing Era.

October 24 - On this day in 1925, composer Luciano Berio was born in Oneglia, Italy. He combined his fascination with the human voice with different techniques including the use of electronics. Also on this day in 1955, vocalist Cheryl Studer was born in Midland, Michigan. She made her debut in 1976 during the production of Bach'sSt. Matthew Passion.

October 25, 1838 - Composer Georges Bizet was born in Paris, France. He came from a musically-inclined family. His father taught singing and his mother was a pianist.

October 26, 1685 - Composer/harpsichordist Domenico Scarlatti was born in Naples, Italy. He was the sixth of ten children; his mother was Antonia Anzalone.

October 27 - On this day in 1782, composer/violinist Niccolo Paganini was born in Genoa, Italy. His works, violin techniques and flamboyant performances inspired many composers and musicians. Also on this day in 1978, violinist Vanessa Mae was born in Singapore. She is credited as being the youngest violinist to record the violin concertos of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.

October 28, 1958 - Buddy Holly made his last major TV appearance, singing "It's So Easy" and "Heartbeat" on ABC's American Bandstand.

October 29, 1970 - The song "Cracklin' Rosie" by singer-songwriter Neil Diamond was certified gold. He started his serious foray into songwriting while attending New York University as a premed student (later shifting to commerce).

October 30, 1972 - Elton John performed for Queen Elizabeth II at her annual Royal Command Variety Performance in London.

October 31, 1970 - James Taylor's LP "Fire and Rain" was certified gold. He worked with guitarist Kortchmar and pianist Carole King on his second album Sweet Baby James which. among others, featured the song "Fire and Rain."
