Side-by-Side

Side-by-side refrigerators have the fridge on one size and freezer on the other, keeping all types of food at eye level. Each shelf has a specified, usually adjustable, size to hold various sizes of packaging. A standard side-by-side refrigerator typically measures from 31 to 36 inches from one side to another, 66 to 69 inches tall and from 28 to 34 inches deep. Since both doors need to open, in opposite directions, they require more overall kitchen space.

Freezer on Top

The most common type of refrigerator is one with a freezer on top and fridge on the bottom. They have various capacities for each section. Features include filtered water dispensers and temperature-controlled sections. A top-mount refrigerator varies from 23 to 36 inches wide, 60 to 69 inches tall and a depth of 27 to 33 inches. Since the freezer is at the top, it is easier to locate items.

Freezer on Bottom

A bottom-mount refrigerator is a relatively new introduction to the market. Many manufacturers have created newer models in this style. A bottom-mounted freezer has the fresh food and produce placed at eye level, while the freezer is at foot level. The dimensions of a unit with the freezer on the bottom are typically the same as top-mounted freezer models. The width averages 33 inches, while the height ranges from 66 to 69 inches and the depth is 32 to 35 inches.

Compact Refrigerators

Compact refrigerators are very compact and ideal when you need a fridge and don't have the space for a full-size unit. They usually have a very small compartment for a freezer and larger one for the fridge. They are cheap and can hold from four to five cubic feet of food.
