Troubleshooting a Whirlpool Refrigerator Ice Maker
- If the refrigerator is running but doesn't make any ice, check to see if the water supply is connected. Open the refrigerator door and see if the light is on. Is the fridge humming away or is it silent? If the fridge is running, make sure the control arm is in the down position. It will be marked "On." Check to see if the water is connected. Run a tap in the kitchen to see if water is supplied to the kitchen. Check that the valves at the wall which go to the supply line aren't turned off. Make sure there isn't a kink in the supply line. Worst-case scenario, you will need to replace the supply line because it's blocked.
- Take a look at the power cord behind the fridge and make sure it's plugged in. Take a look at the circuit breakers. They will be centrally located in the home. See if any of them have tripped. If none of them have, check to see if there isn't another circuit breaker panel somewhere else.Try a light in the kitchen to verify there's power to the house.
- It's possible your water supply has a high mineral content. Check for excessive mineral deposits. Take a look at the ice-maker's machinery. Is there scale build-up? You may need to filter the water.
- Clumping is caused if the ice melts. If you've got the refrigerator on a timer overnight for noise-reasons for example, the warming will cause the ice to melt a bit. The ice will also clump due to temperature changes if you don't use it regularly. You can just break it up with an ice scoop. Banging the bin down on the solid counter, like granite will also break up the ice, but might destroy the bin over time.
- Odd tasting ice can be because the filter needs replacing, if you have a filter. Make sure you wrap food properly in the fridge compartment. Throw the ice out and make some more. Whirlpool has a product called Ice Aid which may help. You can also use baking soda. Bad tasting water can also be caused by minerals in the water. Cloudy ice is caused by infrequent use---wash the bin from time to time.
