How to Create Canopy Bed Curtains
- 1). Measure the current curtains from their tops to the floor; or measure from the ceiling to the floor if you intend to hang curtain rods to transform an ordinary bed into a faux canopy bed. Measure the width and length of the bed and record all measurements. This will give you the measurements you need to gather and cut the appropriate amounts of material for your project.
- 2). Cut out three panels of a material featuring patterns and colors that match or compliment the walls and other decorative elements in the bedroom. To cut the first panel, add two feet to the bed's width measurement and use this new measurement, combined with the curtain height/length measurement, plus 3 inches, to cut out a rectangular section of material. For the remaining two panels, cut out two rectangles measuring the curtains' necessary height, plus 3 inches, by the bed's length, plus two feet. The extra two feet of material on the length and width of the bed produce waves and billows when the panels hang from the curtain rod.
- 3). Sew seams onto each fabric panel on the two edges that will hang vertically from the curtain rod to the floor. Fold the fabric over on these sides to produce a half-inch hem. Secure the fabric in place with safety pins and sew a stitch through the fold to create the seam. Remove the safety pins.
- 4). Sew a hanging channel at the top of all three fabric panels. Lay the material in front of you and fold the top 3 inches of the fabric over to create a channel; secure it into place with safety pins. Sew a seam across the fold, one-fourth of an inch up from the cut edge of the fabric. This produces a large channel at the top to accommodate for thick curtain rails.
- 5). Sew a hem at the bottom of each curtain panel. To do this, fold the bottom inch of the curtain panel in on itself, secure with safety pins and sew a stitch through the material to create the hem.
