Mouth Rinse

If the cold sore symptoms are severe, a dentist or doctor can provide a prescription for Kaopectate or Benadryl. Apply the medication to the affected area with cotton swabs.

Tylenol

If your child has a fever or has muscle ache because of a cold sore, children's Tylenol is good for reducing temperature and alleviating pain. Follow the instructions on the package.

Abreva

Though a cold sore can take 1 to 2 weeks to disappear, Abreva helps speed up the process, while minimizing the pain. It's best for toddlers with recurring cold sores.

Hygiene

Insist that your child washes his hands often, and keep him from touching the cold sore. If not, infection can spread of other areas of the body.

Other Tips

Keep the cold sore dry. The moister it is, the longer it takes to heal. To avoid dehydration, encourage your toddler to drink lots of fluids.
