Warning: You Don"t Have To Be A True Craftsman To Build A Boat!

The fact of the matter is that carpentry work is really quite basic in nature. It simply involves measuring and cutting accurately. The basis of using tools is quite elementary if you really think about it. The key to it all is practice. After all, with practice comes improvement. It's the same with carpentry. There's no secret to it, just practice, practice, and a bit more practice.

It makes sense that the more skill you have the better quality boat you will build. But any skill can be learned, even carpentry.

Of course, the ultimate goal is to build the perfect boat and that is what you should aim for. But, realistically speaking, if you ever want to make use of your boat there may be some imperfections in your construction.

That being said though, it will not make your boat any less durable or functional. Besides, when you're using filler and painting the boat any imperfection in construction will not be noticeable.

This is not to say that sloppy work is okay and it certainly is not encouraged. The point is, though, there is a big difference between good construction and perfect construction. It is paramount that you understand this point, as it will make the difference between you being able to build the boat to fruition or simply quitting in frustration.

If you haven't built a boat before, I highly encourage you to spend a good amount of time (about a month) looking at finished boats. Inspect the boats and look closely at how they are built.

Try to keep your boats construction and finishing (painting) as simple as possible; otherwise you'll just be breaking your back in the process (figuratively and perhaps literally as well). There's nothing wrong with a simple and neat construction and finishing (painting) job. It will cost you less money, and the level of craftsmanship required is within reach of most people when a little bit of effort is exerted.

All my best,

Mark R. Khalil
