Generic Allegra D
The medication known as Generic Allegra D is comprised of both a decongestant called pseudoephedrine and an antihistamine known as fexofenadine. It's helpful in relieving seasonal allergy rhinitis (or SAR for short) symptoms like sneezing, nasal congestion, watery eyes, and runny nose. Generic Allegra D also helps for general relief of sinus congestion and bronchitis.
The exact makeup of this medication is 120mg of pseudoephedrine and 60mg of fexofenadine. It should be taken twice a day, either an hour before, or two hours after a meal. It shouldn't be taken along with a meal containing a large amount of fat, as doing so could reduce its effectiveness. In addition, one shouldn't chew or crush the tablets. It should be swallowed in its entirety using a whole glass of water.
Elderly people and those with kidney problems will exhibit particular sensitivity to this medication. For them, the prescribed dosage should not be as high as usual, or they should take it only once per day. As well, people suffering from high blood pressure, heart disease, angina, or diabetes should exercise caution when taking Allegra D. These people should talk to their doctor about dose-monitoring during their treatment. Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) can also react with Allegra D, and people taking them must not take Allegra D within 14 days of their last dose.
There are also a number of precautions that should be taken if there is a history of thyroid disorder, diabetes, very high blood pressure or severe heart disease, enlarged prostate, urinary retention, antihistamine allergy, or narrow angle glaucoma. Caffeine-containing beverages like coffee, tea, and cola should be little consumed, if at all. They might result in insomnia or restlessness. As well, alcohol should be avoided as it can amplify side-effects and promote drowsiness. Pregnant women should not take Allegra D unless told to do so by a doctor. This is because it is not yet clear what effects it might have on unborn babies. A doctor should also be consulted if you are currently breastfeeding.
The potential side effects of Generic Allegra D are: headache, upset stomach, nausea, insomnia, and a flu or cold. Usually, these side-effects aren't severe enough to warrant a doctor's visit. If they do persist and develop into a problem, then you should see one, however. Drowsiness, a common side-effect of other antihistamines, occurs only rarely with Generic Allegra D because one of its active ingredients, fexofenadine, is a new drug that does not cause these problems. It remains a possibility just the same, so exercise caution when doing things that require mental alertness, like driving. You should speak to your doctor before beginning to use Generic Allegra D.
